In a nutshell

He was recently named Hollywood's highest-paid teen actor, whose day-job is wooing Bella Swan in the Twilight saga (when he's not turning into a wolf). Can things get any better for Taylor Lautner?
Well before Taylor became wolf-wooing Jacob Black, he was doing another kind of shape-shifting; martial arts. He trained for years in a specialised 'extreme karate' with several junior world championships under his (black) belt. He decided to try his hand at acting when his trainer suggested his smouldering good looks might be put to better use on screen.
After commuting back and forth from his hometown of Michigan to LA for auditions, his parents decided to up sticks and move full-time to California to give Taylor a proper stab at fame.
He landed some small TV roles and voice-over work before getting a break age twelve, with a starring role in the 2005 Robert Rodriguez movie "The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl." The same year he won a role in "Cheaper by the Dozen 2," appearing opposite Steve Martin and Hilary Duff.
But this benign cinematic family fare was nothing compared to his next role; as Jacob Black in 2008 film Twilight. Taylor's ticket on the Twilight juggernaut was about to give him a meteoric rise to fame, (possibly the equivalent of winning the golden ticket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.)
However it wasn't till The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) that Taylor really got his teeth into the role when his character was promoted from Bella Swan's goofy best friend to werewolf extraordinaire. He had to beef up for the role though, putting on an extra 30 pounds for the sequel and follow-up Eclipse (2010) (and proceeded to take his shirt off a lot).
In 2009 he hosted Saturday Night Live (the youngest ever host to do so) and did a very good job too. The highlight of the show was him karate-chopping a cut-out of Kanye West, who famously dissed Lautner's then-rumoured girlfriend Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV awards.
Having a rumoured girlfriend with the same name as him hasn't damaged Taylor's career either; he went on to star in 2010 rom-com Valentine's Day (as part of a massive ensemble cast including Julia Roberts) and is currently filming thriller Abduction, alongside Sigourney Weaver.
