Sophie wasn't camera shy from an early age; the daughter of 70s Blue Peter presenter Janet Ellis, she made several appearances on the BBC show as a child. She was famously labelled 'rhombus-face' at school, but the ugly duckling would go on to become pop's beautiful swan.

She began singing with indie band The Audience and secured a record deal while Sophie was still studying for her A Levels but the band split a year later. Her big break came in 2000 when she met the Italian DJ Spiller, adding lyrics and vocals to his then-instrumental track 'Groovejet'.

It went straight to number one, beating Victoria Beckham's first solo outing 'Out of Your Mind' to the top spot, a pop battle that the press dubbed 'Posh v Bex'. She capitalised on this success in 2001 with the release of debut album Read my Lips (from which her biggest-selling single 'Murder on the Dancefloor' was taken.) Not long after and at the height of her success she left from the music scene to have her first child with partner and The Feeling bassist Richard Jones. Their first child Sonny was born prematurely due to Sophie suffering pre-eclampsia a common but serious complication of pregnancy. Their second son Kit Valentine was also born prematurely in 2009.

She shot back into the limelight with third album Trip the Light Fantastic in 2007 and went on to support born-again boy band Take That on their Beautiful World tour.

Sophie also became the face of Rimmel cosmetics in 2008 alongside supermodel Kate Moss, not bad for someone who was once nicknamed for resembling a parallelogram. She's also something of an entrepreneur, running and Dj-ing at the London club night Modern Love alongside husband Richard Jones.
