Sandra Bullock Biography

In a nutshell

She's most famous for her goofy roles but this actress is actually quite a canny Hollywood player, proved by an Academy Award and her very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Her breakthrough role was in blockbuster Speed (1997) where she got to drive a bus very very fast alongside Keanu Reeves, but her Hollywood reign as rom-com queen was cemented with her role in While You Were Sleeping a year later, where she starred as a railroad clerk who saves the life of a handsome commuter and then pretends to be his fianc? while he is in a hospital coma (well, at least he can't answer back).
Perhaps mindful of the Jennifer Anniston syndrome (where you are trapped in rom-com roles for a career) Sandra Bullock attempted to shake the shackles of her typecasting with some more left-field roles in films, some of which she produced herself. But the viewing public were happier paying to see her in fluffy comedies like Miss Congeniality than more gritty roles, such as 28 Days (2000) where she played an alcoholic forced into rehab.
Thus she returned to the rom-com comfort zone, starring in films such as Two Weeks Notice (2002) alongside Hugh Grant, (himself king of the bumbling Englishman shtick) and The Proposal. The latter was her most successful film to date, taking in a whopping $314 at the US Box Office alone (though that might also have something to do with getting to see co-star Ryan Reynolds sans shirt for a good proportion of the film, ahem).
Her determination to prove she was more than a comedic co-star came with 2009's The Blind Side, for which she won a Golden Globe, Academy Award and Screen Actors guild Award for Best Actress in her role as a fiesty Christian foster-carer to a troubled young footballer (a role she allegedly almost didn't take because she was uncomfortable with her religous character). Famously she also won a Razzie for 'worst actress' at the same time for All About Steve, one of her stable 'rom-com' roles. She collected the Razzie and even gave a speech, proving she doesn't take herself too seriously after all.
Sadly it was around this time that her marriage to US reality TV star Jesse James ended in public ignominy when several women came forward in the press claiming they'd had affairs with him. Unlike her former husband, Sandra doesn't mess around and soon divorced him despite his public apologies and rehab-rhetoric. She went on to adopt the son they had planned to raise together as a single mother. More power to her! She is currently set to star in upcoming comedy The Abstinence Teacher with Steve Carell.
