Samia Smith Biography

In a nutshell

She was born Samia Ghadie to a Lebanese father and English mother who met in Abu Dhabi, where Samia spent her early life. Upon moving back to the UK, Samia caught the acting bug early, aged 11, when she starred in an episode of Cracker.
Since then she enjoyed bit-parts in series' such as Heartbeat and Doctors but Samia got her big break in 2000 when she beat ex-Hear'Say singer Suzanne Shaw and Girls Aloud's Kimberley Walsh to the role of Maria Sutherland in Coronation Street.
Here she was propelled to the status of official 'street babe' (alongside co-stars Tina O'Brien and Nikki Sanderson) and enjoyed a character who has been around the block so many times the Weatherfield cobbles have worn down her stilettos (until she fell in love with Liam, of course.)
She was even ranked in the 2003 FHM 100 Sexiest Women in the World poll, and voted sexiest female by the readers of Inside Soap magazine in 2005. Her 'soap babe' status even saw her doing the rounds in lads mags wearing little more than scanties and a smile. These days though Samia claims she is more interested in baking cakes than nights out on the razz.
In real life she is a world away from the racy Maria (aside from those FHM spreads of course, ahem) and has since settled down with property developer husband Matthew Smith. The two married in 2005 (whereupon Samia shedg her Lebanese surname Ghadie post-nuptials) and the two now have a baby daughter called Freya.
Unlike many soap stars, Samia's ambition is seemingly set no further than the Manchester ship canal. She has professed she is content to stay in Coronation Street, rather than aim for the dizzy heights of stardom and recently returned to her role as Maria in May 2010, following her maternity leave.
