In a nutshell

Barbados-born Rihanna was talent-spotted at the tender age of 15 when she did an impromptu audition for a big-wig American record producer on holiday in Barbados at the time who went on the produce her first couple of albums.
Despite her obvious talent, Rihanna didn't make much of a splash till her worldwide number one hit Umbrella from her third studio album 'Good Girl Gone Bad' propelled her into superstardom. As the album title suggests, by this point Rihanna had adopted a raunchier image which branded her rocketing career.
At the peak of her success, Rihanna controversially cancelled her scheduled performance at the 2009 Grammy awards at the last minute. It was later reported that she had been the victim of assault from her then-boyfriend singer Chris Brown (substantiated by a now infamous leaked picture of a bruised Rihanna from the LAPD). He was later charged with assault before embarking on a penitent media-wooing to mend his tattered reputation but his career has never really recovered (most recently being denied a visa to tour in the UK on the grounds of his serious criminal offence).
Rihanna since publically stated her decision not to get back with Brown, mindful of her role model status to vulnerable young women and, in the spirit of Tina Turner has since gone from strength to strength! Her fourth studio album 'Rated R' went platinum and she is currently embarking on her fifth.
If that wasn't enough Rihanna is also a bit (well, a lot) of a philanthropist. Amongst other altruistic activities she founded her very own charity in 2006 called the Believe Foundation, set up to help terminally ill children.
