Early
DeWyze attended St. James Catholic Elementary School in Arlington Heights, Illinois and Prospect High School until last year. After leaving Prospect, inspired by his teachers and his interest in music, he enrolled at Forest View Alternative School.  Lee never graduated from any high school. He began working as a salesman of paint since I was fifteen and continued in use for six years, until the Hollywood round ofAmerican Idol.  His musical influences include Cat Stevens, Eric Clapton, Ben Harper and Simon & Garfunkel . He has tattooed on his arm from the lyrics of “Father and Son”, a classic Cat Stevens.  Before Idol had a band, which played at The Chicago Huddle, a program hosted by ABC 7′s Ryan Chiaverini . There, Lee sang “Another Sleep Song”, a song of their own, including his second album, Slumberland.
He began singing when she was very young. I found Louis Svitek, of Chicago, who saw DeWyze, then 17 years old when he played guitar and sang at a private party in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Svitek, who owns the independent record label Wuli Records, along with Ryan McGuire offered him a contract with the company. DeWyze formed the “Lee DeWyze Band.” Other band members were Louis Svitek, Ryan McGuire and Jeff Henderson. Lee recorded two albums, so I’m told and Slumberland. Thanks to the tours conducted in the area and for his performances in various public places, Lee and his band were well known in his city, even got to play on WXRT radio before participating inAmerican Idol.

American Idol
DeWyze auditioned in Chicago at the United Center for the ninth season of American Idol on June 22, 2009. His friend Vincent Ferrara, who also tried his luck at the auditions in Chicago, was the one who encouraged him to stand. Lee auditioned with the song “Is not No Sunshine” and was one of thirteen contestants from Chicago who went to the next round, the smaller number of the seven cities where auditions were held. During Hollywood week, he joined a band with Aaron Kelly and Crystal Bowersox, both reached the Top 24 and later the Top 5.
His best friend among the competitors is Andrew Garcia.  They were roommates during the whole season, until Garcia was eliminated in the Top 9.
DeWyze was one of two finalists for the program and the only male participant in the season that never was among the three less votes. The judges praised him for having left behind their shyness and have shown, with confidence, that he was “there to win.”
