In a nutshell
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was a precocious so-and-so from an early age, mastering the piano by age five and showcasing her talent at open mic nights while the rest of her schoolmates were doing their homework. Education clearly played second fiddle to an extraordinary musical ambition which saw her chip relentlessly away at the music industry (at one point even working as a songwriter for the likes of Britney Spears and The Pussycat Dolls). Her hard graft paid off and she was eventually signed in her own right. The 2008 release of debut album The Fame followed by The Fame Ball world tour culminated in worldwide Gaga mania. She is probably more famous for her idiosyncratic vintage glam rock style (cultivated through performing in downtown NYC cabaret shows while she was still waiting to be discovered) than for her actual songs. Her overblown eccentric style tends to provoke 'love her or hate her' reactions in her contemporaries; When comparisons were made between her and Christina Aguilera, the latter bristled claiming she didn't know if Lady Gaga was a man or a woman. Me-ow!
Indeed rumours of her being a Hermaphrodite (which she famously sent up in her video for Telephone) proliferated for a good while. All this of course was welcome publicity for the eccentric Gaga juggernaut. She embarked on another world tour The Monster Ball Tour in 2010 to promote her second album The Fame Monster, which was largely praised for its theatricality (she works with a hand-picked candre of costume and set designers dubbed Haus of Gaga) and she herself described as 'pop-electro opera'.
For someone modelled on Queen and Grace Jones she perhaps unsurprisingly has a strong gay following which she has credited for supporting her meteoric rise to stardom. She later claimed her single Poker Face was about her own bi-sexuality and vocally supports equality for the gay community.
She suffers from Lupus, an inherited 'connective tissue disease' which she recently admitted to being borderline positive. In a recent interview she claimed she had stopped dating people because it drained her creativity. Lady Gaga -Biography from (http://www.talktalk.co.uk/celebrity/biography/person/lady-gaga/235)
