In a nutshell

He's the dimpled Geordie cockle-warmer that won our hearts on The X Factor 2009, and now young Joe is now attempting to take on the pop world.
He spent his formative years singing karaoke (yes really) and entering singing competitions in his home town of South Shields before going on to study performing arts at Newcastle College.
Joe was still only 18 when he appeared on the reality show that made him famous, with his heart set on pop stardom (and possibly fellow dimpled Geordie X Factor judge Cheryl Cole).
He sang Luther Vandross' tearjerker 'Dance with My Father' in his audition that even made tough judge Simon Cowell's eyes go misty. No mean feat! The rest, as they say is X Factor history.
His winning song and debut single The Climb (originally a Miley Cyrus song) was famously the subject of a chart battle for the much-coveted place of UK Christmas number one in December 2009.
The aptly-named Rage Against The Machine launched a Facebook-based campaign was started to protest at the reality show's dominance over the charts. Following much support in the press, Rage Against the Machine did pip Joe to the post... though The Climb, um, climbed to the top spot a few days after Christmas.
Since his win Joe and Simon Cowell's other cash-cows, um we mean finalists, have been performing on the X Factor live tour, reminding people who they are before a career in west-end musicals awaits them.
Joe has also made a few requisite TV and music festival appearances and has been whisked off to LA to work on his debut album, due out later this year. He's also been signed up to model for Next. Who's a busy boy then!
Joe faced a lot of rumours about his sexuality in the press since being catapulted into the limelight, which his denied until recently when he came out as gay in the press. The teenager was prompted to go public after his Twitter account was targeted by hackers. Joe McElderry - Biography from (http://www.talktalk.co.uk/celebrity/biography/person/joe-mcelderry/251)
