In a nutshell

He's the self-styled 'mad scientist' of cooking, who won his third Michelin star younger than anyone in history. Not bad for a self-taught chef who's only formal training is a week in Raymond Blanc's kitchen. Heston first got bitten by the gastronomic bug age 16 when his parents took him to a French restaurant whilst on holiday in Provence. Inspired by the likes of lobster sauce and leg of lamb, he set his heart on gastronomy as his professional ambition.
He spent the next ten years in an unglamourous series of day jobs (photocopier salesman and debt collector among them) while he schooled himself through the classical repertoire of French cuisine, hopping over the pond on research trips to Gallic restaurants and suppliers at every opportunity.
In 1995 he and his wife bought a 450-year-old pub in Bray, Berkshire with no view, an outside toilet and home to the surrounding area's outlawed drinkers. This was to become the world-famous Fat Duck restaurant, recipient of three Michelin stars (only the 4th UK restaurant ever to do so) and the place where Heston would hone his so called 'molecular gastronomy' with dishes such as sardine ice cream and snail porridge.
In 2009 The Fat Duck hit a culinary blip when it was temporarily closed following a food poisoning scare, which was later explained by several of the waiting staff having the common winter bug the novovirus while on duty. That should be a lesson to all of us to take a sick day, ahem.
Heston's fame brought him to the realm of the celebrity chef and he fronted BBC shows such as Heston Blumenthal: In Search of Perfection before being whisked away to Channel 4 to join their glitterati of culinary presenters.
Here he fronted programmes such as Big Chef Takes on Little Chef, where he attempted to improve the tarnished image of Britain's best?known roadside cafe and the series 'Feasts' which showed off Heston's 'culinary alchemy' by way of themed banquets for celebrity guests.
