In a nutshell
The 25 year old ing?nue found fame with hit film 'An Education' which won her a BAFTA and now she has Hollywood at her feet. Not bad for someone with no formal acting training.Carey had something a peripatetic childhood (her father managed the European arm of Intercontinental Hotels and the family moved accordingly) and got the acting bug early when she got a part in a school production of The King and I... in the chorus line.
Her heart was set on the stage from this day on (in opposition to her parents wish for her to have a proper education) and was remarkably dogged in pursuit of fame. Despite being turned down by three drama schools she stubbornly kept her eyes on the prize, working as a studio runner and even writing to the likes of Kenneth Branagh and Julian Fellowes demanding acting mentoring. The latter even invited her to dinner and gave her a casting agent. Who says tenacity doesn't pay off?
This proved to be the break she needed and after a successful audition for the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice she landed her with the role of Kitty, younger sister to Keira Knightly's Elizabeth (the two are still purportedly friends).
Steady TV and film work followed including adaptations such as Bleak House, and one-off dramas such as 'My Boy Jack' with Daniel Radcliffe. She also starred in an acclaimed stage revival of The Seagull alongside Kristen Scott Thomas for which she received rapturous universal acclaim from theatre critics (no mean feat). Then she did it again on Broadway when the production made its US debut, winning a Drama Desk nomination.
If this was good, it was all about to get much better when she was cast in An Education, a British romantic drama about a 16 year old student whose dream of going to Oxford is diverted by an older lothario. She won a BAFTA for the role, as well as Golden Globe and Oscar nominations.
The film roles then began coming thick and fast; in 2009 she played opposite Johnny Depp as one of the gangster John Dillinger's prostitutes in Michael Mann's crime film Public Enemies. She also starred in The Greatest, alongside Pierce Brosnan and Susan Sarandon.
This year she took a starring turn in Oliver Stone's Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps (where she met co-star and boyfriend Shia Le Beouf) and Never Let me Go, an adaptation of the famous Kazuo Ishiguro novel, both schedule for 2010 release.
Considering her new Hollywood fame it's refreshing that young Carey is still self-effacingly British; she used to get around LA by bus (until Warren Beatty found out and elected to drive her round instead).
