In a nutshell

He was one of the few contestants to bring a semblance of hipness to US reality show American Idol with his glam-rock falsetto and was crowned runner-up in 2009. Since then Adam Lambert has enjoyed staggering success - and controversy - in equal measure.
Born in San Diego, Adam always seemingly had a proclivity for the jazz hands with a background in musical theatre working in shows such as Hello Dolly! Hair and The Ten Commandments (alongside Val Kilmer, coincidentally).
He moved to LA and channelled his innate theatricality into performances at alternative cabaret and club nights before making a stab at the mainstream via American Idol. Legend has it he got the inspiration to audition for the show in a magic mushroom-induced vision while at the Burning Man music festival in the Nevada Desert.
He was incredibly popular on the show with his outlandish costumes and penchant for wearing more make-up than Katie Price, and was easily the stand-out best performer with even winner Kris Allen commenting that it should have gone to him instead. (Ah, Kris, where are you now?)
But Adam was destined for bigger things than a manufactured pop career and he quite deliberately went his own way soon after his Idol fame by coming out as gay in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, and performing a homoerotic routine at the American Music Awards.
This shook up some sections of the right-wing press and the ABC network subsequently pulled his scheduled appearance on Good Morning America, something his supporters criticised as a media double standard. (It's difficult to believe Miley Cyrus might have been provoked the same reaction had she done some crotch-grinding with a backing singer.)
Such controversy has of course done nothing to damage Adam's credibility or career. He was able to call on the songwriting services of Lady Gaga, Pink and Muse for his platinum-selling studio album For Your Entertainment and is currently performing on his sell-out Glam Nation Tour.
He was even invited back to be guest mentor on the most recent series of Idol (a first for a former contestant in the history of the show) and there have even been calls for Lambert to star as a full-time judge. But it looks like he'll be too busy launching a global career to bother with small-fry like filling Simon Cowell's shoes.
