In a nutshell
How does an anonymous middle-aged woman living on her own with a cat called Pebbles turn into an international singing superstar? Once upon a time, Jim'll Fix It was the only route for ordinary folk's dreams to come true. These days we have the magic of reality TV to turn dreams into reality and rags into riches (riches being the operative word).Susan Boyle was catapulted to stardom via Britain's Got Talent, the show where ? aside from the obligatory circus freak acts ? you are pretty much guaranteed to see something special. It didn't really matter that she more resembled a dinner lady than a superstar, when she sang that rendition of I Dreamed a Dream to an initially bemused, then shocked judging panel you could almost see the dollar signs light up in Simon Cowell's eyes.
Before her famous audition she had only local notoriety in her Scottish hometown of Blackburn via karaoke and local talent shows but was persuaded to go on the national TV show by her singing coach, and to pay tribute to her mother, her most staunch supporter, who had died the previous year. Her rendition of 'I Dreamed a Dream' from the musical Les Miserables was an overnight international media sensation and tens of millions of people watched the audition video on YouTube.
The pressure of fame unsurprisingly took its toll on Susan, who had learning disabilities due to being deprived of oxygen at birth. Seemingly she wasn't able to cope with the demands of being a reality show star (aka Simon Cowell's cash cow) and increased media reports about her erratic behaviour and mental condition eventually led to her being temporarily admitted to The Priory.
Her debut album 'I Dreamed a Dream' was released in 2009 and was one of the best-selling albums of all time in the UK and US. Incredibly, Susan Boyle was voted by Time Magazine as the seventh most influential person in the world (14 places above US President Barack Obama no less.) Not bad for a middle-aged, church-going, cat lady from an obscure Scottish town.
Most recently Susan has launched a search for an aspiring singer, the winner of the competition will duet with Boyle on her second album The Gift. Susan Boyle Biography from (http://www.talktalk.co.uk/celebrity/biography/person/susan-boyle/250)
