After living in Dayton, Ohio in his early life, Clemens spent the rest of his childhood in Texas. Study at a secondary school where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He began his college career in 1981, launched by the University San Jacinto College North, where he improved to 9-2 in his shirt and wore No. 26. His coach Wayne Graham was who played as it would after Clemens, the University of Texas, this institution has compiled a career as one of the best college pitchers of all time, and was on the mound when the Longhorns won College World Series 1983.

Clemens was in the twelfth round in 1981 with the New York Mets, but did not sign. Opting to go to the University of Texas. Clemens was nineteenth (19th) in the draft by theBoston Red Sox, making his debut on May 15, 1984. Notably Clemens accomplished the feat twice, on April 29, 1986 against the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park, and September 18, 1996 against the Detroit Tigers at Tiger Stadium, ten years later.
