James Byron Dean was an only child and his name was a tribute to the mother of English poet Lord Byron. Wilton’s son Dean, a prosthetic and Mildred Dean, daughter of farmers Methodists, at age 8 he was playing violin and did tap dancing lessons. With the death of his mother, was living with her aunt and uncle Marcus Winslow on Ortence and Fairmount.
Considered an introspective child, Jimmy, as he was called, grew up on a farm of 300 acres of his uncles, there learned to drive tractor and milking cows. In 1949, Dean moved to Los Angeles with the intention of studying drama and live with her father and stepmother. Dropped out of college and moved to New York attend the legendary Actor’s Studio by Lee Strasberg. The play was a flop but James Dean drew the attention of critics. Ask staged “the immoral” based on the work of André Gide, playing a homosexual. With the play won the Tony Award for best actor of the year.
In 1954, to star in Elia Kazan, “East of Eden” (Eden, Brazil), based on the work of John Steinbeck, in which he played an embittered young and solidarity, had to sign a contract with a clause undertook not to race cars during the filming.
As James Dean was a promise, Marlon Brando was already a star. In 1954, he met the young star of The Silver Chalice, Pier Angeli, for many the love of her life, but Pier’s mother was against the relationship, because he is not Catholic. The disruption of courtship shook the actor.

When going for a run on September 30, 1955, he became involved in a fatal accident, immediately leaving the spine and suffering from internal bleeding. When he was placed in the ambulance, the passenger who was by his side, the mechanic Rolf Wütherich, heard “a soft cry issued by Jimmy – the wail of a boy calling hismother or a man facing God.”
The medical examiner noted that the body of James Dean was covered in scars. At a bar in Hollywood, where he was known as “Human Ashtray”, he offered his chest and asked people to put out their cigarettes on it.
On the day he died, James Dean still sold out with his first film. The final consecration came just days after his death, when Rebel hit the cinemas. He received two Academy Award nominations posthumously. In 1956, for East of Eden (the first posthumous nomination in the history of the award), and in 1957 by So Giant, both for best actor. Won two Golden Globe in 1956 as best actor and the following year, a special award established him as the crowd favorite actor.
