He is known for his controversial stance in a country (USA) where he says reign since the 1980s both a conformist and a strong individualism in the sociological sense. The themes it deals touch onpolitics, economics, religion and society.
The son of a Catholic journalist and a Jewish nurse, Bill Maher grew up in New Jersey. While studying at university, he tried a career as a comedian in New York in the club “Catch a Rising Star” (literally “Catch a rising star,” a breeding ground for comedy).
After several years, learning about the craft of comedy in the U.S., he occasionally officiated as host of club nights, and it is this quality that was noticed by a talent scout from the TV showJohnny Carson [ref. desired]. There is then quickly and noticed strange apparitions.
In 1993, Maher found his style with the show Politically Incorrect on Comedy Central, a talk show where Maher and his guests, from all backgrounds, evoke thepolitical issues of the day with humor and a lot of freedom. The show moves from Comedy Central on ABC in 1997. By joining a mass medium, it makes better audience ratings.
The issue, however, disappears in 2002. Immediately after the attacks of September 11, 2001, the Americans, in agreement with the assertions of President George W. Bush, a majority believe that terrorists are cowards hating American liberties. But six days after the tragedy, Maher and Dinesh D’Souza, a conservative author of Indian origin have about this supposed “cowardice” a conversation during which agrees with Maher about his guest, who considers terrorists more like warriors. He then declared: “We are the cowards by sending missiles to 2,000 miles away. That’s cowardice. Staying in a plane that will crash into a building, one can say what you want, it is not cowardice. “
The reactions are not made to wait. Advertisers remove their commercials from the show, ABC’s 17 stations continue to broadcast the show, which begins to lose money.
Maher then joined with HBO Real Time with Bill Maher when he addresses the same themes as in Politically Incorrect.
Maher describes himself as a libertarian, but many media observers believe he is defending liberal positions (the adjective “liberal” is to be taken here in its North American sense, is progressive, left).
In a very anti-French, he supported France and its health system with humor. Although a supporter of the Obama health reform, he severely criticized for its funding uncertain.
