In a nutshell

This actor shot to fame as the 11th Time Lord in the BBC's Doctor Who from relative obscurity. No pressure there, then.
Despite only landing this role at the age of 27, the Northampton-born Matt had worked pretty steadily as an actor beforehand although treading the boards was not his first goal as a career.
Young Matt wanted to be a footballer and even got signed on at youth level with Nottingham Forest and Leicester City but a back injury put paid to his dreams of success in the beautiful game until he discovered a similar passion for drama.
He went on to join the National Youth Theatre in London before going on to study drama and creative writing at the University of East Anglia and soon professional stage roles were coming thick and fast. He starred in Alan Bennett's acclaimed play The History Boys and made his West End debut opposite Christian Slater in the play Swimming with Sharks, along with bit-part TV roles.
His big theatre break however came in 2007 with the award winning West End play 'That Face' where he played a hapless aspiring artist who renounces his dreams to look after his alcoholic mother. Gladly in Matt's case life does not imitate art, and his own artistic dreams were fast becoming a reality.
His first major TV role was in Party Animals, a BBC drama about the profligate life of Parliamentary Researchers in Westminster. This was fairly small fry in comparison to what was to come: filling David Tennant's shoes as the next Doctor Who.
As a relative unknown, Matt was subject to intense media interest and pressure but has since proved the universe is in relatively safe hands. The role clearly has its perks at Matt has since picked up a model girlfriend (Daisy Lowe) and rumours suggest he may quit as Time Lord next year to try his luck in Hollywood.
