In a nutshell

With her break-out role as geeky songstress Rachel on hit TV series Glee and an impressive Broadway career behind her, it certainly isn't raining on Lea Michele's parade.
Much like her Glee alter-ego, Lea knew she was destined for the stage from an early age and wasn't what you might say short on ambition. Born and brought-up in New Jersey, she launched a Broadway career while her friends were still playing with Barbies. She starred in a production of Les Miserables aged eight before going on to star in shows such as Fiddler on the Roof and Ragtime.
She got the opportunity to leap from stage to screen with a starring turn in the 2006 hit musical Spring Awakening, which earned her a Tony Award nomination and a Drama Desk Award for Best Lead Actress. Spring Awakening (and later Glee) co-star Jonathan Groff introduced her to Ryan Murphy (also the brains behind 'Nip/Tuck') who was auditoning for the show and the rest, as they say, is history.
Her role as the sassy high school diva on Glee has earned her plenty of critical accolades, in fact she's in danger of outshining all her Glee co-stars (maybe with the exception of Matthew Morrison). She's been nominated for an Emmy and Golden Globe for her role, as well as picking up a Satellite Award for Best Actress in a Series, Comedy or Musical.
Off-screen she's rumoured to be almost as straight-laced and career focused as her plaid skirt-wearing screen alta-ego with a vested interested in veganism and animals rights; her latest role is for PETA, speaking out against the fur industry.
Although she does an edgy side; nine tattoos to be precise (everyone has to get their kicks somehow) including the title of the Spring Awakening Broadway show's song 'I Believe' on her wrist. Lea is also a vocal supporter of gay rights (perhaps unsurprising as a Broadway starlet) and in 2009 performed alongside Glee actor (and off-screen best friend) Jonathan Groff for True Colours Cabaret, a fundraiser in support of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality.
