In a nutshell

She's most famous for netting celebrity Casanova Russell Brand but there's more to the kooky singer-songwriter than meets the eye.
Katy was always keen on singing, having been raised on a strict diet of church music by her pastor parents and even released a gospel-rock album at the age of 15. 'Secular music' was not approved on in the Perry household but when young Katy stumbled across a Queen record at a slumber party all that was to change.
At 17 she moved to LA to pursue fame and fortune, which initially proved a bit of a struggle as she was dropped by two record labels before managing to complete any albums. Perhaps God really does reward the faithful though as she was eventually signed to Capitol Records in 2007 who then released her first album 'One of The Boys'.
By this time the buzz was building around her (even Madonna was a fan) something probably helped by the release of attention-grabbing singles. 'Ur So Gay' for instance was unsurprisingly divisive (homophobic or slyly satirical? Hmm) and 'I kissed a Girl' proved there's nothing like faux bi-sexuality to sell records.
Perry-mania soon went global with Katy collecting nominations and awards left, right and centre but her prize collection arguably has to be ladies man actor/comedian Russell Brand. While co-hosting the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards she even sported a burlesque West Ham United basque and knickers (Brand's football team) proving love might well be blind after all.
Katy's kooky style -vintage pin-up meets girl-next-door- hasn't hindered her popularity much either (except with Lilly Allen perhaps, who Perry once described as a fatter version of herself.)
