Born to parents of Norwegian origin (his surname is actually Aurness), a seller of drugs and a journalist, King James Arness enter the army after high school in 1943. Ends up on the African front, and after a brief period in Casablanca, is involved with the 3rd Infantry Division landing at Anzio. Ten days after the invasion, was seriously wounded in the feet and legs by a German machine gun and is then discharged from the army, bringing to life the rest of the severity of their injuries. During his convalescence, his brother Peter tells him to take part in a course for the Radio at the University of Minnesota, shortly after becoming an announcer for radio station in Minneapolis.
Later, after the suggestion of a friend, he went to Hollywood in hopes of finding work as an extra and in the meantime he studied at the Bliss-Hayden Theatre School under the direction of actor Harry Haiden. Spotted by an agent gets his first small role in a film starring Loretta Young and Joseph Cotten: The Farmer’s Daughter.
