In a nutshell
Chris (full name, Christopher Anthony John Martin, don't you know) was born in Exeter. One of those places you've heard of but don't know anybody who's ever been. But anyway... his mum, Alison, was a music teacher and boy must she be proud. Not only has Chris ended up a musician, but one of the biggest-selling on earth. Wowsa!Chris studied at University College London and that's where he met his fellow bandmates Guy, Jonny and Will. The band formed in 1998 and rocked to success with their first album, Parachutes. Since then they've followed up with even bigger hits including X&Y and A Rush Of Blood To The Head. It's fair to say that Chris is widely considered to be the 'main man' of the band, taking a lot of the credit for writing the material and, of course, the onthevergeofincredible vocal performances.
Being such a talented writer it makes sense to share some talent with other artists, and that's exactly what Chris has done, several times. One of the best pop songs of the last few years, Jamelia's See It In A Boy's Eyes, was written by Chris, as well as Nelly Furtado's All Good Things Come To An End.
As far as influences go, Chris has mentioned a number of artists including a-ha (he said they did some incredible songwriting, which we're not about to disagree with) and U2 (okay, we're not so keen on them).
In terms of being a music fan, Chris seems to have wide and varied tastes. Obviously, his now BFF (that's best-friend-forever in case you weren't up to date with teen slang) Jay-Z is high on the list, but so too are Girls Aloud. He's called them one of the world's greatest bands and, true to his word, invited them to support Coldplay on a couple of their shows. What a brilliant night that would have been. Chris is also a fan of Kylie (Coldplay did a cover of Can't Get You Out Of My Head as part of their Glastonbury headlining set), Arcade Fire and Muse.
Being somewhat of a geeky music guy, nobody really took any notice of Chris' love life. But that all changed when he started dating American actress and all-round beautiful person Gwyneth Paltrow. They've been together since 2002 and they married just a year later in 2003. The pair now have two children and seem very happy shacked up in a huge house somewhere in what we're guessing is a posh part of London.
